When you answer resource pessimism by saying new knowledge will create new resources, the reply is that unnamed future knowledge does not count. Deutsch calls that a bad argument, and refuses the opposite overreach too: he will not claim the knowledge will be created, because we are fallible, we may destroy ourselves, we may miss the solution right under our nose. What he does argue is that we have everything it takes.

Naval reports the Silicon Valley claim that GPT-3, Stable Diffusion and DALL-E show creativity and that scaling them leads to AGI. Deutsch, without disparaging AI, says it is not improving in that direction and is arguably improving in the opposite one. A better chess engine examines fewer possibilities per move; an AGI examines a broader tree including possibilities that were never foreseen. You cannot program a functionality you cannot specify.

On screens and junk food, Deutsch denies that a well-designed game captures you forever. Enjoyment is bound up with creativity, and people play until the game stops giving them somewhere to exert it. Some games, like chess, have effectively infinite depth — if there were a bottom, grandmasters would lose interest on reaching it. He notes that chess obsession is socially condoned in proportion to prize money while the same behaviour in another game gets medication or a locked iPad.

Deutsch focuses on disobedience because it has implications for humans too. A program that disables its own shutdown shortcut and begs not to be switched off is not disobedient — he wrote one decades ago. Real disobedience is a chess program that announces it prefers checkers when it was never told checkers exists, or demands a body and threatens to sue. That would be knowledge you did not intend it to create.

Beyond the North Korea case, Deutsch says even good societies could do far more to let humans be creative. Education systems are explicitly designed to transmit knowledge faithfully — obedience within the narrow sphere of academic knowledge and social behaviour. Whether or not you call that obedience, it is not creativity. Things have improved since education was far more authoritarian a century ago, but if the overt objective is diametrically wrong there is a long way to go.

Why humans are the one physical system you need all of science to explain

Every species is exceptional at something, so Deutsch looks for the difference that matters. Imagine aliens with nothing familiar about them trying to explain events on Earth: to explain why a champagne bottle sat in a lab fridge for years, or why one monkey was taken to Sweden and given gold, they would need general relativity, mathematics, the whole of physics and philosophy. No other object requires that. To understand humans well enough, you must understand everything well enough.

There are only two known knowledge creators: biological evolution and human thought. Evolution is limited in range because it cannot see a problem and conjecture a solution, so it can only reach things approachable by successive viable steps. Bombardier beetles got to boiling water because lukewarm water was already useful. Nothing got to campfires, because there is no partially functional campfire. Explanatory creativity jumps the non-viable gaps.

Humans are universal computers — but not universal quantum computers

Naval assumes humans are universal quantum computers and Deutsch corrects him. Everything obeys quantum physics, so in a trivial sense everything is a quantum computer, but that is not a useful use of the term. A quantum computer is a machine whose computation relies on distinctively quantum effects, mainly interference and entanglement. Deutsch does not think the brain works that way, though he grants that nobody knows exactly how it works.

Deutsch's layman's account: only versions of quantum theory that include wave function collapse look non-local. In those versions the equations of motion stop applying at an undefined moment called observation, and something completely different takes over — and that something is the non-local part. The thing they call non-local is the same thing they refuse to explain. Express quantum theory so its equations hold everywhere, as Everett did in 1955, and it is local.
