Why social media divides us when television pulled us together
Ridley expected the internet and social media to make everyone see each other's point of view, and concedes it went the other way. His comparison is radio, which in the early twentieth century helped dictators rise, versus television, which pulled everyone into the mushy middle. Naval supplies the mechanism: television had high production values and high distribution costs, so few channels and sanitised, shared sources. When anybody can create content constantly, divisiveness is close to inevitable, and the filter bubble becomes personally tuned rather than merely channel-selected.
