The Why-Tuesday Test

Deutsch attacks unexplained prophecy by asking why this specific claim rather than any of the infinitely many alternatives. He notices that when he reaches for a catastrophe he invents a planet crossing the galaxy at half the speed of light, but he could equally have said an asteroid at ninety-nine per cent of light speed, or an unknown illness that kills everyone in days. Each is a sophisticated prediction with no explanation behind it, so none carries information. The same applies to the doomsday preacher: why Tuesday and not Wednesday, and why your reading of the text rather than the other person's. The answer runs out almost immediately, because there was never an explanation, only a prediction. Deutsch treats invoking such limits, whether physical wipeout, AGI apocalypse or simulation, as logically equivalent to believing in the supernatural.

Deutsch develops the test on the Naval podcast while answering whether there could be knowledge beyond human comprehension, using an invented killer planet and a doomsday date to show that unexplained specifics are arbitrary.

How to run it

    Isolate the specific claim

    Strip away the narrative and write the bare prediction: the event, the magnitude and the date. Vagueness hides arbitrariness.

    Pro tip If the claim resists being written this way, it may not be a prediction at all.

    Ask why this one and not the neighbours

    Pose the why-Tuesday-not-Wednesday question directly. Why this speed, this date, this threshold, this interpretation.

    Pro tip Ask about the choice among sources too: why your reading and not the other expert's.

    Generate arbitrary rivals

    Invent two or three equally detailed alternatives yourself. If they are as easy to state and as hard to rule out, the original had no explanatory content.

    Watch out Sophistication of the scenario is not evidence for it; it is usually cover for the missing explanation.

    Ask for the mechanism, not the source

    Request the explanation that generates the specifics. Citing an authority, a text or a model output is not the same as having an account of why the number is what it is.

    Pro tip A real explanation will also tell you what would make it wrong.

    Watch out Predictions that fall out of a tested theory are exempt; do not use this test to dismiss entailed forecasts.

    Refuse to act on unexplained limits

    Treat the claim as noise for decision purposes. Deutsch's point is not that catastrophe is impossible, but that an unexplained prophecy cannot guide what we can or should do.

    Pro tip Keep the underlying problem on the agenda; rejecting the prophecy is not rejecting the risk.

    Watch out Do not flip to certainty in the other direction, since that is the same error reversed.

Why a planet at half the speed of light

Asked whether there might be theories humans can never understand, Deutsch concedes we cannot know. He then illustrates why that concession changes nothing: he can imagine being wiped out by a planet hurtling through the galaxy at half the speed of light, but he could have said an asteroid at ninety-nine per cent of light speed, or an unknown illness that kills in days. There is an infinity of such statements, each a sophisticated prediction with no explanation behind it.

The possibility of an unknown limit is admitted while its use as an argument is rejected, because unexplained specifics carry no information.

The world ends on Tuesday

Deutsch describes asking a doomsday preacher why the world ends on that Tuesday rather than Wednesday. The answer is that Tuesday follows from their interpretation of the Bible. He then asks why their interpretation rather than the rival interpretation that gives Wednesday, and the answers stop almost immediately, because there is a prediction but no explanation underneath it.

Two questions expose the absence of an explanation, and the prediction loses its claim on anyone's behaviour.

Common mistakes

Mistaking detail for evidence

Highly specific scenarios feel more credible than vague ones, but Deutsch shows the specificity is free. Anyone can generate an infinity of equally detailed claims with no explanation behind any of them.

Using the test to dismiss real theories

Predictions that follow from a well-tested explanation, such as light bending around the Sun, are the opposite case. The test targets prophecy without explanation, not risky predictions with one.

Concluding that nothing can go wrong

Rejecting an unexplained doom forecast does not establish safety. Deutsch's position is that unexplained limits cannot guide action, not that limits are impossible.
