Ridley deliberately downplays disruption in the book. Most innovation is incremental and looks surprisingly gradual while it is happening; it only looks disruptive in hindsight. His test case is that the first version of a new technology tends to resemble the last version of the old one.

Naval arrived in Silicon Valley expecting genius inventors in the mould of the Wright brothers, Morse, Bell, or Newton, and concluded from their absence that the industry had lost its edge. Ridley's book showed him the premise was wrong: it was always collaborators, and the habit of awarding a Nobel Prize or patent to one individual manufactures the great man of history.

Naval rejects the standard cost-of-living explanation for talent leaving a hub. Innovators are the highest earners in history and the most leveraged people, so they can always afford to live where they want. What actually pushes them out is regulation, being forbidden from working, or the place simply becoming unpleasant to live in.

If America loses its mojo, who picks up the baton?

Ridley worries that in a globalised world there may be nowhere left to escape to, and that the fallback options are poor: China is politically authoritarian, Europe is not innovative and is centralising through the EU, and India is the maybe. Naval adds the decisive filter: California does not create entrepreneurs, it attracts them, and China is not an attractor because it is not an immigration destination.

Digital innovation can escape to the cloud; physical innovation is stuck

Naval splits his forecast in two. Digital innovation can escape chiefs, priests, and thieves into the cloud, at least until they work out how to reach it. Physical innovation cannot: it needs infrastructure, large markets, and relatively deregulated environments. His diagnostic is travel speed, which has not improved for mostly regulatory reasons, and the cost is that fusion, hypersonic transport, and parts of biotech stall.

Naval separates local environmentalism, which everyone can get behind, from global command-and-control environmentalism that demands progress stop. He argues innovation is what allows more with less and is why the world is reforesting, so the way to help India and China is to accelerate them past the wasteful phase rather than block them. Why innovation is absurdly concentrated in one place at a time

If innovation were lone genius, it would be geographically spread; instead it clusters, which is itself evidence for the evolutionary account. Ridley walks the moving hotspot through Renaissance Italy, the low countries, Victorian Britain, ancient Greece, Fujian and the Yangzi, and asks why the bushfire only burns in one place at a time. The answer is ecosystem: borrowed technologies, adjacent suppliers, and a local customer base of other innovators.

Ridley's pattern is that innovators relocate from uncongenial regimes to congenial ones, so political fragmentation protects innovation. Europe's mountains and peninsulas made unification hard and gave Gutenberg somewhere to go. Song Dynasty China was unusually decentralised during its most innovative period. America looks unified from outside but functions as competing regimes inside, which is why Elon Musk could threaten to leave California for Texas.

Past its hype cycle and in a quiet building phase in 2020, its top innovators are scattered worldwide and often anonymous, more than half his own crypto investments sit outside the Bay Area, and funding comes from public token issuance rather than Sand Hill Road. The centuries-long dead zone between innovation hubs

Naval's addition to Ridley's history is the gap. Between each hub there are 50, 100, or 200 years with no place to innovate and the rate collapses. If innovation is the flower of a well-tended garden, uprooting the flowers imposes a huge deadweight loss on society while a new garden assembles from regulation, innovators, wealth, and even good weather. Ridley says this filled a gap in his own understanding.

Ridley's shorthand for what kills innovation hubs is some combination of chiefs, priests, and thieves. Ming China supplied the authoritarian chief, Abbasid Arabia the religious revival that crushed a flowering of knowledge, and Paris the book-burning of Bernard of Clairvaux. He argues the world nearly lost the habit entirely, and was saved by the Italian city-states and by people like Fibonacci carrying Indian numerals from North Africa.

Tracing the green revolution back through five men to a cold trail in Korea

Ridley walks the provenance of Norman Borlaug's dwarf wheat backwards. Borlaug got the idea in a bar in Buenos Aires from Burton Bayles, who had seen Orville Vogel growing it in Oregon, who had the varieties from Cecil Salmon of MacArthur's staff in Tokyo, who found them in Japan where Gonjiro Inazuka had bred them, sourced from somewhere in the Korean Peninsula before the trail goes cold.
